About This Piece
4″ Parvathi Devi Idol | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina
This 4-inch standing Parvathi Devi idol is handcast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian alloy composed of five metals, and finished with an antique green patina that gives the surface a warm, aged character.
The figure is rendered in a gentle tribhanga stance, the body carrying a subtle triple bend that is a hallmark of classical South Indian temple iconography. Parvathi stands on a tiered lotus base typical of devotional bronzes in this tradition. Her tall, stacked crown rises in the style seen across Shaiva temple sculpture. The face is calm and composed, with defined features and a steady expression. Layered necklaces, armlets, and earrings are cast with careful detail at this small scale, and the lower garment falls in pleated folds that follow the contour of the legs. One hand is raised in a gesture of offering or blessing, while the other rests naturally at her side. The level of surface work on a piece this compact reflects the skill required to hold iconographic detail through the casting and finishing stages.
Parvathi is the goddess of grace, strength, and domesticity in Hindu tradition. As the consort of Shiva and mother of Ganesha and Kartikeya, she is worshipped widely across South India, particularly on Fridays and during Navaratri. Her form in standing posture signifies accessibility and active presence rather than the detached repose of seated icons.
Panchaloha is an alloy with roots in ancient Agama shastra, combining gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron in proportions considered ritually significant. It is denser and more complex in composition than standard brass, and it holds fine detail well through the lost-wax casting process. The material develops a stable surface over time.
The antique green finish is achieved through controlled oxidation, producing the tonal variation visible across the surface. Because each piece is individually cast and finished by hand, no two are identical in texture or patina depth.
At 90 grams and 4 inches tall, this idol is suited to a personal puja corner, study altar, or as a considered gift for housewarmings, weddings, or religious occasions.
