About This Piece
5.5″ Lord Murugan with Vel & Peacock | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina
This 5.5-inch standing figure of Lord Murugan is handcast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian alloy of five sacred metals, and finished with an antique green patina that gives the surface a layered, aged character. The idol measures 5.5 inches in height, 3 inches in width, and 2.5 inches in depth, and weighs 330 grams — substantial enough to hold its presence on an altar or display surface without being oversized.
The figure is rendered in the classical South Indian iconographic tradition, with Murugan standing upright in a composed, frontal posture on a tiered temple-style pedestal. His four arms carry the Vel at center, the Seval Kodi or rooster flag to one side, and sacred implements in the remaining hands. The peacock, his vahana, stands beside him at the base. The crown is rendered with fine vertical detailing, and the jewelry, waistband, and pleated drapery show the kind of crisp line work that comes from careful wax carving before casting. The expression is calm and composed — not decorative but devotionally precise.
In South Indian tradition, Murugan is the deity of valor, wisdom, and divine order. He is worshipped as the remover of ego and the granter of clarity, and his Vel symbolizes the penetrating power of knowledge over ignorance. His iconography has been codified through centuries of temple worship, particularly in Tamil devotional culture, and this form closely follows those established proportions and attributes.
Panchaloha — an alloy of gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron in prescribed proportions — has been the canonical material for South Indian temple icons for over a thousand years. It is valued for its ritual sanctity, structural density, and the warm tonal range it develops over time, especially when finished with a patina treatment.
The antique green finish visible across the surface is achieved through controlled oxidation, creating tonal variation between raised details and recessed areas that reads as depth rather than decoration. As with all handcrafted pieces, minor differences in surface texture, color distribution, and fine detailing will exist between individual casts.
This idol is well suited for a home puja room, personal altar, office desk, or as a considered gift for Skanda Shashti, Karthigai Deepam, housewarmings, or weddings.
