This 2.5-inch Lakshmi Varagar idol is cast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian alloy of five sacred metals, and depicts Lord Varaha — the boar-headed avatar of Vishnu — seated in lalitasana with Goddess Lakshmi resting on his left knee. The figure measures 2.5 inches in height, 2 inches in width, and 1.5 inches in depth, weighing 200 grams — compact in scale but substantial in hand.
The piece is shaped through traditional lost-wax casting, a process that demands precise wax modelling before the metal pour, followed by careful hand-finishing to bring out the iconographic detail. The boar head carries a tapered crown, and the torso is adorned with layered chest ornaments characteristic of the Vaishnava sculptural tradition. One hand is raised in abhaya mudra — the gesture of protection and reassurance — while the form of Lakshmi beside him is rendered with a conical crown and draped ornamentation. The idol rests on a tiered lotus pedestal, consistent with classical South Indian bronze iconography.
The Lakshmi Varagar form holds specific significance within Vaishnavism. Varaha, the third avatar of Vishnu, is venerated as the protector who restores cosmic order, while his union with Lakshmi in this form represents prosperity rooted in divine protection — abundance upheld by strength and dharma.
Panchaloha is a five-metal alloy historically used in South Indian temple bronzes. Its composition gives the metal density, structural integrity, and a surface that accepts patination richly over time. It has been the preferred material for devotional castings in the Agamic tradition for centuries.
This idol carries an antique green finish, visible across the surface as a deep, uneven patina that settles differently across raised and recessed areas, lending the piece visual depth and a sense of age.
