About This Piece
3″ Lakshmi Hayagriva Idol | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina
This 3.5-inch Lakshmi Hayagriva idol is cast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian alloy composed of copper, zinc, tin, silver, and gold, and finished with an antique green patina that has developed a warm, aged character across the surface.
The figure is shown seated on a tiered lotus pedestal with scroll detailing along its base. Hayagriva, the horse-headed form of Vishnu, appears with four arms — the upper right hand raised in abhaya mudra, the upper left holding what appears to be a chakra, while the lower hands rest in postures associated with blessing and knowledge. Goddess Lakshmi is seated at his left side, smaller in scale but clearly rendered with her own ornamental crown and composed posture. The crown of Hayagriva rises in a flared, architectural form above the horse head, and fine incised lines across the torso, shoulders, and arms indicate jewelry and garment detailing. The casting captures considerable surface complexity for a piece of this size.
In the Vaishnava tradition, Hayagriva is the deity of wisdom, speech, and learning — the form Vishnu took to recover the Vedas and restore sacred knowledge to the world. His pairing with Lakshmi unites the pursuit of knowledge with the principle of auspiciousness and material wellbeing, making this iconographic combination especially meaningful for scholars, students, and those engaged in creative or intellectual work.
Panchaloha has been the canonical material for South Indian ritual sculpture for centuries. The inclusion of five metals gives the alloy both physical durability and a ceremonial significance rooted in Agamic tradition. It holds detail well during casting and develops a depth of tone over time that single-metal alloys cannot replicate.
The antique green finish visible across this piece results from the deliberate oxidation of the metal surface, revealing the warm brass undertones beneath where the finish is lighter. Because each idol is individually handcrafted, the distribution of patina and the texture of finished surfaces will vary between pieces.
At 150 grams and compact in footprint, this idol is well suited to a puja shelf, study desk, or home altar, and makes a considered gift for Vidyarambham, housewarmings, or academic milestones.
