About This Piece
3″ Kamakshi Amman Idol | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina
This 3.25-inch Kamakshi Amman idol is cast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian five-metal alloy, and finished in an antique green patina that gives the piece the appearance of an aged bronze recovered from a temple treasury. The goddess is depicted seated in Padmasana on a layered lotus pedestal, with four arms extended outward holding her characteristic attributes. Her expression is composed and inward-looking, with finely defined facial features — a straight nose, calm eyes, and a slightly ornamented brow. The tall, stacked crown is detailed with a crescent motif near the top, consistent with her iconographic identity as a form of Parvati. Jewelry — necklaces, armlets, and bodice ornamentation — is rendered with visible precision across the chest and torso, and the lotus base itself carries carved petal detailing around its circumference.
Kamakshi is among the most venerated Shakti manifestations in South Indian tradition, worshipped as the presiding deity of Kanchipuram and regarded as the source of love, compassion, and spiritual authority. The Padmasana posture places her in a state of stillness and inner sovereignty — not a goddess in action, but one from whom all power originates. This iconographic reading is central to the Kamakshi tradition and is reflected carefully in this form.
Panchaloha is an alloy of gold, silver, copper, iron, and lead — proportioned according to Agamic prescription — and has been the canonical material for South Indian devotional bronzes for over a thousand years. Its density, fine grain, and capacity to hold intricate surface detail make it the preferred medium for small-format sacred sculpture. It carries a warmth and weight that distinguishes it immediately from lighter alloys.
The antique green finish is applied to heighten surface contrast, drawing out the carved detail across the crown, jewelry, and base. Because this piece is individually cast and finished by hand, each idol carries its own texture and tonal variation — no two are identical, and that variation is inherent to the process.
At 200 grams and 3.25 inches tall, this idol is well suited to a home puja shelf, a personal meditation altar, or as a considered gift for Navaratri or other Shakti observances.
