About This Piece
4″ Graceful Annapoorani Idol | Handcrafted Panchaloha
This 4-inch Annapoorani idol is handcrafted in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian five-metal alloy, and measures 4 inches in height, 2.5 inches in width, and 2 inches in depth, weighing approximately 300 grams.
The figure is cast using the lost-wax process, a technique that allows craftsmen to render intricate surface detail before finishing each piece by hand. The goddess is depicted seated in a composed frontal posture on a double-tiered lotus base, her legs folded, her bearing upright and still. Her four hands are positioned with deliberate iconographic intent, two extended forward at the lower register and two raised at the sides, consistent with the Annapoorani form associated with the offering and bestowal of sustenance. The face carries a calm, full expression with defined brow work and a composed gaze. Her crown rises in the characteristic South Indian kirita mukuta form, tapering upward in layered sections. Elaborate jewelry covers the neck, shoulders, and upper arms, and the torso detailing includes a fitted bodice with fine incised ornamentation. The stepped square pedestal beneath the lotus base gives the piece stable vertical proportion and grounds the figure formally.
Annapoorani, a form of Parvati, is the goddess of food and nourishment in the Shaivite tradition. She is understood as the one who ensures that no living being goes without sustenance, and her worship is considered essential in households where food, family, and daily ritual are treated as interconnected acts of devotion.
Panchaloha is an alloy of five metals — gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron — proportioned according to Agamic prescription. It has been the canonical material for consecrated South Indian temple icons for over a millennium, prized for its density, casting fidelity, and the warm silver-gold tone it develops under polish.
This piece carries a bright polish finish, visible in the high reflectivity across the crown, jewelry, and lotus petals. Because each idol is individually cast and finished by hand, minor variation in surface tone and fine detail is inherent to the process.
This idol is well suited to a home puja room, a Navaratri golu arrangement, or as a considered gift for a new home or auspicious occasion.
