About This Piece

Flute Krishna | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina Finish

This 7.5-inch Flute Krishna is cast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian five-metal alloy, and stands in the classical tribhanga posture — the triple-flexed stance in which the body bends gently at the neck, torso, and knee, creating a fluid, rhythmic silhouette that has defined Krishna iconography for centuries. The figure holds the flute raised to the lips, arms extended with quiet composure, one foot crossed lightly over the other atop a stepped lotus base.

The casting captures a level of surface detail that requires considerable skill and patience — the layered crown, the sun-disc halo with its serrated edge, the articulated garments fanning outward at the waist, the anklets and arm ornaments, and the fine linear work across the dhoti. Each element follows established iconographic convention and is rendered with the precision that comes from working within a living sculptural tradition. After casting, the surface is hand-finished to bring these details forward before the patina is applied.

Krishna in the Venugopal form — the flute-bearer — is one of the most enduring subjects in Indian devotional art. The flute represents the call of the divine toward the self, and the tribhanga posture is understood as an expression of ease, grace, and complete absorption in music and devotion. This form is venerated across Vaishnavite traditions and appears consistently in both temple and domestic worship contexts.

Panchaloha is an alloy composed of five metals — gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron in prescribed proportions — and has been the canonical material for South Indian sacred bronzes for over a millennium. It is valued for its density, its workability under skilled hands, and its longevity. The alloy holds fine detail well and develops character over time.

The finish here is an antique green patina, applied by hand and visible across the surface in the image — a deep verdigris tone that settles into recessed areas while warmer brass tones remain present at raised edges and fine relief work. Because each piece is individually cast and finished, minor variation in tone, texture, and surface character is inherent to the process.

At 650 grams and 7.5 inches tall, this piece is well-suited to a puja room, a home altar, a study shelf, or as a considered gift for a devotee, a musician, or a collector of traditional Indian bronzes.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
