About This Piece
9″ Serene Sitting Hanuman Idol for Pooja & Home Décor | Handcrafted Wood Carving
This 9.5-inch seated Hanuman idol is handcarved from Vaagai wood, depicting Lord Hanuman in a calm, cross-legged posture with hands pressed together in anjali mudra — a gesture of prayer and complete surrender.
The carving is executed with considerable precision. The face carries Hanuman's characteristic simian features rendered with restraint — a broad nose, defined brow, and an expression that reads as composed rather than fierce. A large circular prabhamandala, or halo, frames the figure from behind, carved as a continuous arch rising from the base. The crown is layered and detailed, consistent with traditional iconographic depictions of Hanuman in devotional contexts. Across the torso, ornamental necklaces and a sacred thread are carved in low relief, and the pleated dhoti folds downward with careful attention to textile texture. The mace rests to one side, its presence understated but iconographically correct. This level of surface articulation — particularly in the ornamentation and drapery — requires patient hand-tool work across multiple stages of roughing, shaping, and fine detailing.
In Indian tradition, Hanuman embodies bhakti, courage, and selfless service. The seated, praying form — sometimes called Pranam Hanuman — emphasises his role as a devoted servant of Rama rather than the warrior form more commonly depicted. This posture is considered especially auspicious in domestic worship settings.
Vaagai wood is a dense, close-grained hardwood that holds fine carving detail well and develops a warm, dark tone over time. The finish on this piece is deep brown with a matte quality that draws out the natural grain beneath the carved surface, giving the sculpture an earthy, grounded character without artificial polish.
As with all handcrafted work, minor variation in surface tone, grain pattern, and fine detailing will exist between individual pieces. These differences are inherent to the process and confirm the handmade nature of the work.
At 800 grams and compact in form, this idol is suited to a personal puja corner, a study or meditation space, or as a considered gift for someone who values craft alongside devotion.
