About This Piece
9″ Sacred Sitting Garudan Idol for Pooja & Home Décor | Handcrafted Wood Carving
This 9.5-inch seated Garudan idol is handcarved from Vaagai wood, rendered in a traditional form that depicts the divine eagle-king in a posture of anjali mudra — hands folded at the chest in complete surrender and reverence.
The carving reflects a high degree of craft discipline. The face carries a composed, almost meditative expression, with clearly defined brow lines, steady eyes, and a faint suggestion of calm resolve. The crown is layered and structured, carved with concentric detailing that follows classical iconographic convention. The wings, spread wide on either side of the torso, are shaped with broad, sweeping strokes that give the figure weight and presence without excess ornamentation. The seated posture rests on a tiered base, and the lower body shows pleated drapery rendered with confident chisel work. Each surface transition — from wing to shoulder, from crown to face — has been worked by hand, and the visual cohesion of the piece speaks to the carver's familiarity with this form across years of practice.
In Hindu tradition, Garuda is the vahana of Lord Vishnu and one of the most venerated figures in devotional iconography. He represents loyalty, strength, and the complete dissolution of ego before the divine. Depictions of Garuda in anjali mudra specifically emphasise this quality of devotion — power held in perfect stillness.
Vaagai wood is a dense, close-grained hardwood that has long been favoured for devotional carvings. It holds fine detail without splintering and develops a rich, darkened tone over time, deepening with age rather than degrading.
The finish on this piece is a deep reddish-brown wood tone, even across the surface and allowing the natural grain to remain visible beneath. Because this idol is individually handcarved, minor variation in surface texture, depth of detail, and colour tone should be expected and understood as inherent to the process.
This piece is well suited to a puja room, a home entrance, or as a considered gift for someone with a genuine connection to devotional art and traditional craft.
