About This Piece
8″ Divine Dakshinamoorthy | Handcrafted Brass
This 8.5-inch handcrafted brass sculpture depicts Dakshinamoorthy seated in a composed cross-legged posture beneath a richly detailed multi-armed canopy tree, rendered in an antique polish finish. The piece measures 8.5 inches in height, 6 inches in width, and 5.5 inches in depth, and weighs approximately 2900 grams, giving it a solid, substantial presence.
The casting work on this sculpture is layered and precise. Dakshinamoorthy is shown with four arms, each carrying distinct iconographic attributes including what appears to be a lotus and a serpent, with the composition framed by an elaborate circular backdrop of spreading branches and leaf clusters worked in fine relief. Two devotee figures in anjali mudra are seated at either side of the base, flanking the central form in reverent symmetry. The face carries a calm, open expression — composed rather than austere — and the ornamentation across the crown, torso, and arms has been worked with careful attention to traditional detail. The base is integrated and sculpted to suggest a rocky terrain, grounding the overall form.
Dakshinamoorthy is understood in the Shaiva tradition as the supreme teacher — the aspect of Shiva who transmits knowledge through silence. He is typically depicted facing south, seated beneath a banyan tree, with sages at his feet. The form represents the transmission of wisdom from the formless to the manifest, making it a significant presence in spaces dedicated to study, reflection, or daily practice.
Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been the primary material for Indian devotional sculpture for centuries. It holds fine detail through casting, develops a warm tonal depth over time, and is resistant to corrosion, making it well suited to both ritual and long-term decorative use.
The antique polish finish gives this piece a dark, burnished tone with highlighted relief areas, as visible in the image. Because each sculpture is individually cast and hand-finished, minor variation in surface texture, tone, and detailing is inherent to the process.
This sculpture is suited to a puja room, a personal meditation corner, a study, or as a considered gift for someone who values the iconographic tradition behind the form.
