About This Piece
6″ Nataraja - Dancing Lord Shiva | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina
This 6-inch Nataraja idol depicts Lord Shiva in the Ananda Tandava pose, cast in Panchaloha — the traditional South Indian five-metal alloy — and finished with an antique green patina. The piece measures 6 inches in height, 5 inches in width, and 1.5 inches in depth, and weighs approximately 500 grams.
The form follows the iconographic canon established in South Indian temple sculpture, where every element of the Nataraja composition carries precise devotional meaning. The figure is shown mid-dance within a prabhavali — a ring of flames — with multiple arms extended in dynamic balance. One hand holds the damaru, the small double-sided drum whose beat marks the rhythm of creation. Another carries agni, the flame of dissolution. A third hand forms the abhaya mudra, signifying protection. The fourth points downward toward the raised foot, indicating liberation. Beneath the dancing foot rests Apasmara, the dwarf figure representing ignorance suppressed by awareness. The casting captures the elaborate crown, the flowing matted hair spreading outward, and the fine ornamentation across the torso and limbs — details that require skilled hand-finishing to render cleanly at this scale.
In Hindu cosmology, the Nataraja form represents Shiva as the force governing creation, preservation, and dissolution — a philosophical concept made visible through movement frozen in metal. The image has been central to South Indian devotional and temple traditions for over a millennium.
Panchaloha is an alloy composed of five metals — gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron — historically used in the casting of sacred idols across South India. The alloy is valued for its density, tonal richness, and resistance to corrosion, qualities that make it suitable for both ritual use and long-term preservation.
The antique green finish, visible across the surface in the image, gives the piece the aged character of temple bronzes. As with all handcrafted work, individual pieces will carry natural variation in the depth and distribution of the patina.
This piece is suited to a home puja room, a meditation or yoga space, or as a considered gift for someone with a serious interest in Indian devotional art.
