Invoke divine protection and time consciousness with this 5.5-inch Panchaloha Kala Bhairava idol, a fierce yet benevolent form of Lord Shiva. Known as the guardian of time (Kāla) and the protector of temples, Lord Bhairava is depicted here with intense detailing—holding a trident, drum, and bowl, standing majestically with his loyal dog vahana by his side. Handcrafted from the sacred South Indian Panchaloha alloy (five-metal bronze), this intricately sculpted idol radiates power and spiritual energy. His flaming hair, adorned with a skull crown, symbolizes destruction of ego and protection against evil forces. Ideal for home shrines, temple sanctums, and devotees seeking protection, clarity, and time discipline, this statue is not just a devotional artifact but also a powerful presence in any sacred space. Note: At Cosmic Studio, every sculpture is individually handcrafted, ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike. Minor variations in color, texture, and detailing are a natural result of the artisanal process and are considered marks of authenticity. These unique characteristics, along with potential differences in lighting and screen displays, may cause the product to appear slightly different from the images shown.

About This Piece

5″ Kala Bhairava Idol | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Wood Patina

This 5.5-inch Kala Bhairava idol is cast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian five-metal alloy, and finished in a warm wood patina that brings out the depth of the sculpted surface. The figure stands upright on a tiered lotus base, four-armed, with his loyal dog positioned at his feet — a defining iconographic element of Bhairava's form across temple traditions.

The casting follows the classical lost-wax method, where molten alloy is poured into a wax-modeled mold to capture fine detail before the piece is cooled, removed, and finished entirely by hand. The result here is evident in the ornamental detailing across the chest, the articulation of each arm, and the flame-like crown of matted hair rising above the head. The face carries a composed but intense expression — neither wrathful nor serene, but watchful. Each hand holds its attribute with clarity: the trishul is sharp and well-defined, and the small bowl is cleanly cast on the opposite side. The dog vahana is sculpted with proportion and presence, not as a minor detail but as a meaningful element of the composition.

Kala Bhairava is understood in the Shaiva tradition as the guardian of time and the fierce protector of sacred spaces. He governs the eight directions and is considered the keeper of Kashi in Shaivite scripture. Devotees seek his presence for protection, discipline, and the dissolution of fear.

Panchaloha — an alloy of gold, silver, copper, iron, and lead or zinc depending on regional tradition — has been used in South Indian temple iconography for over a thousand years. It is valued for its structural stability, its capacity to hold fine detail through casting, and its receptivity to patina finishing over time.

The wood patina finish gives this piece a burnished, antique warmth — reddish-brown tones with darker recesses that emphasize the relief work across the figure. As with all handcrafted pieces, natural variation in tone and surface texture will occur between individual castings. This idol suits a home puja room, a personal altar, or a serious collector's display of classical South Indian bronzes.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
