About This Piece
5″ Divine Mahalakshmi with Arch | Handcrafted Panchaloha
This 5-inch Mahalakshmi idol, measuring 5" H x 4" W x 2.5" D and weighing 600 grams, is handcrafted in Panchaloha — the traditional South Indian alloy composed of copper, zinc, tin, silver, and gold — and presented beneath a fully cast ornate prabhavali arch.
The piece is shaped using traditional lost-wax casting, a process that demands careful wax modeling, mold preparation, molten alloy pouring, and hours of hand-finishing to bring out the surface detail. The prabhavali rising behind the figure is pierced and carved with layered floral and foliage motifs, flanked by lion-headed pilasters at the base, and crowned with a kirtimukha face at the apex — all rendered in a single unified casting. The idol itself is seated in lalitasana on a tiered lotus pedestal set atop a stepped rectangular base, with iconographic precision across all four arms: the upper hands hold kalashas, while the lower hands are positioned in abhaya and varada mudras — gestures of protection and bestowal.
Mahalakshmi, as Goddess of prosperity, abundance, and auspiciousness, holds a central place in Indian devotional life. Her four-armed form — particularly in the Lakshmi Narayana or Varalakshmi traditions of South India — is worshipped during Varalakshmi Vratham, Diwali, and at moments of new beginnings such as housewarmings and weddings.
Panchaloha has been the material of choice for South Indian temple icons for over a thousand years. The presence of five metals is considered ritually significant, and the alloy is valued for its density, fine casting resolution, and long-term stability.
This piece carries a polished finish that brings out a deep, dark silver-toned surface with warm highlights across raised details — visible clearly in the ornamentation, crown, and arch carvings. As a handcrafted object, each piece carries natural variation in tone and surface texture that is part of the work, not a flaw.
Well-suited for a home puja room, office altar, or as a considered gift for someone beginning a new home or observing Varalakshmi Vratham.
