About This Piece

4″ Yoga Narasimha | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Polished Finish

This 4-inch Yoga Narasimha idol is handcrafted in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian five-metal alloy, and measures 4 inches in height with a base spread of 2.5 inches across both width and depth, weighing approximately 500 grams.

The form depicts Narasimha seated in a composed yogic posture, a iconographic tradition that demands considerable technical precision from the craftsperson. The lion-faced deity is rendered with four arms — the upper hands holding a chakra and what appears to be a conch or staff, the lower hands resting in a manner consistent with meditative composure. The facial expression balances ferocity with stillness, which is the defining challenge of this particular form. The figure sits upon a tiered lotus pedestal with petal detailing along the base, a form that requires multiple stages of wax modeling, mold preparation, and metal casting before finishing begins. The surface detailing across the crown, chest ornaments, and armlets reflects careful hand-chasing after casting, bringing definition to areas that the mold alone cannot fully resolve.

Yoga Narasimha is one of the more contemplative manifestations of Vishnu's man-lion avatar. Where the more commonly depicted Ugra Narasimha embodies active fury, this form represents the moment after — fierce energy turned inward, transmuted into steadiness and protection. In South Indian devotional tradition, this seated, meditative posture is understood to confer fearlessness and emotional equilibrium on the devotee.

Panchaloha is an alloy composed of five metals — gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron in prescribed proportions — and has been the canonical material for consecrated South Indian temple icons for over a millennium. It is valued for its density, its receptivity to fine detailing, and its ceremonial significance within the Agamic tradition.

This piece carries a polished finish, giving it a bright, silvered surface tone visible across the image. As with all handcrafted Panchaloha work, minor variation in surface tone, texture, and detailing from piece to piece is inherent to the process and reflects the nature of individual casting and hand-finishing.

This idol is well suited for a home puja room, personal meditation altar, or as a considered gift for someone with a serious devotional or collecting practice.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
