About This Piece

4″ Yoga Narasimha | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina

This 4-inch Yoga Narasimha idol is handcrafted in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian five-metal alloy, and measures 4 inches in height with a footprint of 2.5 inches in width and depth, weighing approximately 500 grams. The deity is depicted in a seated yogic posture on a tiered lotus pedestal, with four arms — the upper two holding what appear to be a chakra and a conch, and the lower two resting open in a gesture of calm readiness. The lion face is rendered with characteristic intensity: wide-set eyes, a prominent mane framing the jaw, and an expression that holds both ferocity and composure simultaneously. The crown, armlets, and waistband are all clearly defined, indicating careful attention to iconographic detail in the casting.

Panchaloha — an alloy traditionally composed of copper, gold, silver, iron, and lead or zinc in prescribed proportions — has been the canonical material for South Indian temple icons for well over a thousand years. Its density gives finished idols a satisfying weight and structural permanence, while the copper content contributes to the deep, warm undertone visible beneath the patina. The lost-wax casting method used to produce this form requires the sculptor to model the figure in wax, encase it in clay, burn out the wax, and pour molten metal into the resulting cavity — a process that cannot be rushed and demands both technical knowledge and familiarity with traditional iconometric proportions.

In the Vaishnava tradition, Yoga Narasimha represents the aspect of Vishnu's man-lion avatar in a state of meditative withdrawal — the fierce energy that once tore apart Hiranyakashipu now turned inward, held in stillness. This form is associated with the dissolution of fear, particularly deep or karmic fear, and is revered in South Indian temple worship as a protector who operates at the level of consciousness rather than conflict.

The antique green finish visible across this piece results from a controlled patination process applied to the surface after casting, producing the teal-to-verdigris tones seen across the body and pedestal, with gold-bronze highlights emerging at raised details. Because each idol is individually cast and finished by hand, minor variation in the depth and distribution of the patina is inherent to the process and distinguishes authentic handcrafted work from mechanically reproduced pieces.

This idol is well suited to a home puja room, a dedicated meditation corner, or as a considered gift for someone with a serious interest in South Indian devotional art and iconography.
