About This Piece
4″ Standing Garuda in Anjali Mudra | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina
This 4-inch standing Garuda idol is cast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian alloy comprising copper, zinc, tin, silver, and gold, using handcasting techniques that follow the iconographic conventions of classical temple sculpture. The piece measures 4 inches in height, 2 inches in width, and 1.5 inches in depth, and weighs approximately 200 grams.
The form is shaped with considered attention to iconographic detail. Garuda stands upright in a composed, frontal stance with hands folded at the chest in Anjali Mudra — a gesture of devotion and surrender before Lord Vishnu, whose vahana he is. The wings are spread open at shoulder height, rendered with layered feather detailing that gives the figure breadth and presence despite its compact scale. The crown rises in a tapered stack above the face, which carries a calm, watchful expression. The torso and lower body are ornamented with incised jewelry work, and the figure rests on a stepped rectangular base in the temple-style tradition. The casting preserves fine surface detail across the feathers, crown, and garments — marks of skilled hand-finishing at each stage.
In Hindu tradition, Garuda is revered as the divine vehicle and devoted servant of Lord Vishnu. He represents courage, swiftness, loyalty, and the power to overcome obstacles and adversity. His image is worshipped on Garuda Panchami and is considered auspicious in Vaishnava households and temple shrines alike.
Panchaloha is regarded in the Agama Shastra tradition as the prescribed alloy for devotional idols, valued for its sacred composition, density, and the warmth of its surface over time. It has been central to South Indian idol-making for centuries, chosen for both its material durability and its spiritual significance.
This piece carries an antique green patina finish — visible in the teal-green oxidation across the wings and surface — layered over the warm brass-bronze tone of the base metal. As with all handcrafted work, minor variations in color depth and texture are natural and individual to each piece.
It is suited for a home puja room, a personal altar, an office desk shrine, or as a considered gift for housewarmings, Vaikunta Ekadashi, or new beginnings.
