About This Piece
4″ Royal Sofa Ganesha | Super-Fine Handcrafted Brass
This 4-inch Ganesha, cast in superfine brass and measuring 4" H x 3.5" W x 2" D with a weight of 250 grams, depicts the deity seated in lalitasana — a composed, relaxed posture — upon an elaborately detailed throne with ornamental legs and a carved base that anchors the entire composition with considerable visual weight.
The sculpture is cast using traditional lost-wax techniques that allow for the level of surface resolution visible across the piece: the layered folds of the dhoti, the beaded jewelry draped across the torso, the spiked halo radiating behind the head, and the fine granular texturing on the throne cushions and armrests. Each of these elements requires careful hand-finishing after casting to bring out clarity in the relief work without losing the warmth of the brass surface. The iconographic layout follows classical convention — four arms carrying the ankusha, the pasha, a modak, and an open hand in abhaya mudra, with Mushika positioned at the base of the throne.
Ganesha, as Vighnaharta and Mangalamurti, holds the first position in Hindu ritual and is invoked at the outset of prayers, ceremonies, new ventures, and transitions of all kinds. The sofa or throne posture — less common than the standard seated form — conveys ease and sovereignty, suggesting a deity who is both accessible and presiding.
Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been the preferred material for Indian devotional sculpture for centuries. It holds fine detail through the casting process, develops a rich warm tone over time, and is structurally durable without being brittle — qualities that make it well-suited to pieces intended for daily use in worship or long-term display.
This piece carries a polished finish, visible in the golden brightness across the drapery and throne, with darker recesses in the relief work that give the ornamentation depth and contrast. As with all handcrafted pieces, minor variation in tone and surface texture between individual sculptures is expected and inherent to the process.
At 250 grams and a compact footprint, this Ganesha is appropriately scaled for a home puja room, office desk, or console shelf, and is a considered gift for housewarmings, new business openings, and Ganesh Chaturthi.
