About This Piece
4″ Lord Dhanvantari Idol | Handcrafted Panchaloha
This 4-inch standing figure of Lord Dhanvantari is cast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian five-metal alloy composed of copper, zinc, tin, silver, and gold, and measures 10cm in height with a footprint of 5cm by 4cm, weighing 200 grams.
The idol is produced through traditional lost-wax casting, a process that demands precise wax modeling, careful metal pouring, and extensive hand-finishing to bring out the fine surface detail visible across the figure. The crown, facial features, layered drapery, and ornamental bands on the arms are all worked by hand after casting, giving the sculpture its refined clarity at this compact scale. The four-armed standing posture follows classical iconographic convention: the upper hands carry the shankha and chakra, while the lower hands hold the amrita kalasha and a medicinal herb. The figure stands on a tiered circular temple-style base, consistent with traditional devotional forms of this deity.
Dhanvantari is revered in Indian tradition as the physician of the gods and the source of Ayurveda. He emerges from the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean, bearing the pot of amrita, the nectar of immortality. Worship of Dhanvantari is associated with health, healing, and the removal of illness, and his idol is consecrated in homes, clinics, and wellness spaces with that intent.
Panchaloha has been the preferred material for South Indian devotional sculpture for centuries. The combination of metals produces an alloy valued for its density, acoustic quality, and warm reddish-copper tone, qualities visible in the polished surface of this piece, which catches light with a burnished warmth across the body and ornamentation.
The finish on this idol is a hand-applied polish that enhances the surface sheen and brings out the cast detail. Because each piece is individually cast and finished, natural variation in tone, texture, and surface character is expected and is consistent with authentic handcrafted work.
This idol is suited for a home puja room, a personal health altar, a clinic or Ayurvedic practice, or as a considered gift for physicians, healers, or anyone for whom health and well-being hold particular meaning.
