About This Piece
4″ Varahi Amman Idol for Pooja & Home Décor | Super Fine Brass | Antique Polish
This 4-inch Varahi Amman idol is cast in superfine brass and finished with an antique polish, measuring 4 inches in height, 3 inches in width, and 1.5 inches in depth, with a solid weight of 230 grams.
The figure is rendered with considerable sculptural precision. Varahi Amman is depicted seated in a composed, authoritative posture on a detailed pedestal base with raised ornamental patterning along its border. She carries multiple arms — each holding distinct ritual objects and weapons — and wears an elaborate crown with a radiating sun-like halo behind the head. The boar face is clearly defined, with expressive features that follow established iconographic convention. Across the chest and shoulders, layered necklaces and ornamental detailing are carefully worked into the casting. The overall surface carries a high level of relief, with each attribute and adornment readable at close inspection. Achieving this level of detail in a 4-inch form requires significant skill in both the wax modelling stage and the post-casting hand-finishing work.
Varahi is one of the Saptamatrikas — the seven divine mothers — and is considered among the most powerful protective forms in the Shakta tradition. She is invoked for strength, the removal of obstacles, and protection from negative forces. Her worship holds particular importance in South Indian devotional practice, where she is venerated as Varahi Amman in her own right, independent of her role within the Matrika group.
Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been the dominant material for Indian devotional sculpture for centuries. It holds fine detail well during casting, develops a warm golden tone, and remains structurally stable over long periods of use and ritual handling.
The antique polish applied to this piece deepens the surface color to a subdued golden-olive tone, drawing out the relief work and giving the idol a weathered, classical appearance. As with all handcrafted pieces, minor variation in surface texture, tone, and detailing between individual castings is inherent to the process.
At 4 inches, this idol fits naturally on a personal puja shelf, home altar, or a dedicated devotional corner, and is also a considered choice as a gift for those who observe Shakta traditions.
