This handcrafted pair of fancy lamps with elephant engraving, cast in super fine brass, each standing 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall, 2 inches (5 cm) wide, and 2 inches (5 cm) deep, weighing approximately 240 g for the pair, features a tiered pedestal base crowned by a wide lotus-petal oil cup, with the body worked in layered ornamental registers and a procession of elephants encircling the mid-section.
Each lamp is produced using traditional lost-wax casting, a method that allows the full sculptural complexity of this tiered form to be resolved with precision. The base is broad and circular, its outermost edge worked with scrolling foliate relief. Above it, a band of individually cast elephant figures — each with clearly defined tusks, foreheads, and bodies — forms a continuous procession around the circumference. This elephant register is separated from the upper column by a row of pointed arch motifs, above which a band of fine vertical ribbing rises in a tapering cone toward the cup junction. A beaded moulding ring marks the transition between pedestal and cup. The cup itself opens in the form of a stylised lotus, its petals scalloped and upturned to hold oil or a tea light, with the interior polished to a bright warm gold. Super fine brass casting is what maintains the clarity of each elephant figure, foliate scroll, arch point, ribbed column, and petal edge across both pieces in the pair.
The lamp — or diya — occupies a foundational place in Indian devotional practice. Light is understood as a symbol of knowledge, auspiciousness, and the dispelling of darkness. Elephant motifs, long associated with Ganesha and with Lakshmi's ceremonial bathing rite, carry connotations of strength, prosperity, and sacred protection. Their presence on a ritual lamp reinforces the object's role in welcoming abundance and marking auspicious occasions.
Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been central to Indian devotional and decorative metalwork for centuries. It holds fine cast detail with fidelity, carries a warm tonal depth that develops with age, and is structurally durable — qualities that make it suited for both active ritual use and long-term display.
This pair carries a polished finish, visible in the bright warm gold tone of the lotus cups and upper pedestal surfaces, with a deliberately darkened silver-toned treatment across the elephant band, foliate base, and arch register that gives the contrasting two-tone composition its clarity and visual weight. Handcrafted pieces carry natural variation in surface texture and tone between individual sculptures.
This lamp pair is well suited for a puja room or home altar, for auspicious gifting on Diwali, housewarmings, and religious occasions, or as a collector's piece in classical Indian devotional brassware.
Note: At Cosmic Studio, every sculpture is individually handcrafted, ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike. Minor variations in color, texture, and detailing are a natural result of the artisanal process and are considered marks of authenticity. These unique characteristics, along with potential differences in lighting and screen displays, may cause the product to appear slightly different from the images shown.
Handcrafted — every piece varies by ±3%. That variation is the mark of a human hand, not a flaw.
