About This Piece

3″ Meditating Buddha | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina Finish

This 3-inch Meditating Buddha is handcrafted in Panchaloha, a traditional South Indian bronze alloy, and measures 8cm in height, 5cm in width, and 4cm in depth, weighing 250 grams. The figure is depicted in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture, with the right hand resting forward over the knee and the left hand resting open in the lap — the posture associated with the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree.

The sculpture is cast using traditional lost-wax techniques that have been refined over centuries in South Indian devotional metalwork. Each stage — from the initial wax modelling to the metal pour, cooling, and hand-finishing — requires close attention to proportion and iconographic accuracy. The ushnisha, the characteristic cranial prominence rendered here with finely detailed spiral curls, the composed facial expression, the draped monastic robe falling cleanly over one shoulder, and the double-tiered lotus pedestal are all shaped and refined by hand. The lotus base, with its petal motifs carved around the circumference, is particularly well-executed at this compact scale.

In Buddhist tradition, this posture represents the culminating moment of Siddhartha Gautama's meditative resolve — calling the earth to witness his attainment of enlightenment. The form carries associations with stillness, clarity, and the disciplined quieting of the mind, which is why representations of this mudra have been central to Buddhist devotional and contemplative practice across Asia for over two millennia.

Panchaloha is a five-metal alloy — traditionally comprising copper, zinc, tin, lead, and trace gold or silver — valued for its density, structural integrity, and the depth of tone it holds over time. It has been the preferred material for consecrated South Indian idols for centuries, prized for both its material stability and its ritual significance.

This piece carries an antique green patina finish, applied to bring out the sculptural detail and replicate the oxidised warmth of aged bronze. As visible in the piece, warm copper undertones show through the green in areas of higher relief, giving the surface layered depth. Because each piece is individually handcrafted, natural variation in patina tone, surface texture, and detailing should be expected and is characteristic of the process.

At 250 grams and 3 inches tall, this sculpture suits a meditation corner, study desk, or office space, and is a considered option for someone looking to gift a piece of devotional or contemplative significance.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
