About This Piece

3″ Cow with Calf | Handcrafted Brass | Gold-Plated Finish

This 3.5-inch handcrafted brass sculpture depicts the Kamdhenu cow with her suckling calf, rendered in a gold-plated finish and measuring 5.5 inches across its base. The cow stands in a grounded, composed posture on a flat rectangular plinth, with the calf positioned beneath her, nursing — a composition that is immediately recognizable in Indian devotional iconography and carries deep symbolic weight.

The piece is worked with considerable attention to surface ornamentation. Across the back and flanks of the cow, raised temple motifs have been cast with clarity — floral medallions, deity figures, and decorative borders that cover the body in the manner of a traditional caparison. The head is fitted with ornamental detailing around the forehead and neck, and a small finial sits at the top of the back. This level of relief work requires skilled casting followed by careful hand-finishing to ensure the motifs read cleanly at this compact scale.

In Hindu tradition, the cow is revered as Kamdhenu, the wish-fulfilling mother, and is associated with abundance, nourishment, and dharmic living. The image of the cow nursing her calf is among the oldest and most enduring devotional forms in Indian sacred art, representing the relationship between provider and dependent, and the continuity of care across generations. It is frequently placed in homes and businesses as an expression of gratitude and an invocation of prosperity.

Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been the preferred material for Indian devotional objects for centuries. It holds fine detail well during casting, develops a characteristic warm tone over time, and is substantially durable. At 950 grams, this piece carries the density expected of quality brass work.

The gold-plated finish gives the sculpture its luminous, warm appearance visible in the image — bright across the raised surfaces and slightly deeper in the recessed areas of the motifs. As with all handcrafted pieces, minor variation in tone, texture, and surface character between individual pieces is inherent to the process.

This sculpture is well suited to a home puja shelf, a study or office setting, or as a considered gift for housewarmings, business inaugurations, and auspicious occasions.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
