About This Piece
2″ Temple Nandhi | Handcrafted Panchaloha
This 2.25-inch Nandhi idol is cast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian alloy composed of five metals including copper, zinc, tin, lead, and gold, and finished with a hand polish that brings out the warm, luminous tone characteristic of this material.
The figure is shaped using traditional lost-wax casting, a technique that allows craftsmen to capture fine surface detail before finishing each piece by hand. The Nandhi is shown in a seated, recumbent posture on a tiered oval base with scroll and petal motifs along its border — a form that closely follows the iconographic conventions of South Indian temple sculpture. Visible across the body are a beaded collar, a bell at the chest, and an ornate decorative harness rendered with careful surface relief. The face is calm and forward-facing, with a composed, attentive expression that reflects the devotional stillness Nandhi is known for.
In Shaiva tradition, Nandhi is the sacred bull and devoted attendant of Lord Shiva — the gatekeeper of Kailash and the embodiment of loyalty, righteousness, and unwavering faith. In temple practice, Nandhi always faces the Shiva Lingam, and placing this idol in that orientation at a home shrine maintains that same ritual logic. Nandhi holds particular significance during Pradosham observances and Maha Shivaratri.
Panchaloha has been used in South Indian devotional casting for over a thousand years. The alloy is valued for its density, its resistance to tarnish over time, and the depth of warm golden-brown tone it develops with age and use. At 200 grams, this compact piece carries a substantive weight that reflects the quality of the casting.
The polished finish gives the surface a bright, reflective sheen, visible clearly in the raised detail work across the harness and base. Because each piece is individually hand-cast and finished, natural variation in tone, texture, and surface character should be expected and is consistent with authentic handcrafted work.
This piece is suited for a home puja shelf alongside a Shiva Lingam, a personal altar, or as a considered gift for occasions tied to Shaiva observance.
