About This Piece
18″ Temple-Style Yazhi Wall Brackets for Home Décor & Pooja | Handcrafted Wood Carving
This is a pair of 18-inch handcrafted wall brackets made from Vaagai wood, each featuring the Yazhi — a mythical guardian creature rooted in South Indian temple iconography. Measuring 18 inches in height, 8 inches in width, and 3 inches in depth, the pair is substantial in scale and weight, designed to be installed as a mirrored set on either side of a doorway, niche, or feature wall.
Each bracket has been hand-carved to replicate the structural and decorative logic of traditional temple corbels, where the Yazhi form was used architecturally to support overhead elements while simultaneously serving as a symbolic protector. The carving work visible here is layered and precise — the creature is shown in a rearing posture, with a lion-like maned head rendered in strong relief, an open jaw, and a compact body that transitions into the form of an elephant at the base. Scrollwork, floral rosettes, and geometric border patterns frame the central figure within a rectangular panel, maintaining the vocabulary of classical temple ornamentation throughout.
In South Indian tradition, the Yazhi is understood as a creature of superior strength — depicted in temple gateways and pillared halls as a force that wards off malevolent energy and marks sacred thresholds. Its presence on a doorway or altar space carries that same protective intent.
Vaagai wood is valued for its hardness, tight grain, and resistance to warping over time, qualities that make it well-suited for detailed relief carving of this depth. The wood takes the rich reddish-brown tone visible here without requiring heavy surface treatment, allowing the natural character of the material to remain present beneath the finish.
Each bracket carries a small brass bell suspended at its base, adding a functional devotional detail consistent with temple craft tradition. Because these are individually hand-carved, natural variation in tone, texture, and fine detail from piece to piece is expected and reflects the nature of the work.
These brackets are suited for entrance corridors, pooja room surrounds, or as architectural accents on feature walls in homes where traditional craft and cultural heritage are taken seriously.
