About This Piece
16" Divine Ardhanareeswarar | Handcrafted Brass | Antique Green Patina
This 16.5-inch Ardhanarishvara idol is handcrafted in brass and finished with an antique green patina, depicting the unified form of Shiva and Parvati in a standing, four-armed posture on a tiered lotus pedestal. The figure weighs 5 kilograms and carries the density and stability that solid brass casting produces at this scale.
The sculpture follows the classical iconographic convention of Ardhanarishvara precisely. The right half carries Shiva's attributes — matted jata flowing upward and outward with characteristic layered coils, and a trishula held in one of the upper hands. The left half renders Parvati's form — softer facial features, elaborate jewelry across the chest and arms, and finely pleated drapery falling to the ankle. Both halves share a single serene expression, the face calm and composed, the posture upright with a gentle sway at the hip. The ornamental detailing across the crown, necklaces, armlets, waistband, and garment borders has been worked by hand, with chasing tools used after casting to define each element clearly.
Ardhanarishvara represents the inseparability of Shiva and Shakti — the masculine and feminine principles understood in Hindu philosophy not as opposites but as complementary halves of a single cosmic reality. This form is central to Shaiva and Shakta traditions and carries theological weight as an image of wholeness, balance, and the source of creation itself.
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc that has been used in Indian ritual and decorative metalwork for centuries. It is valued for its structural density, resistance to corrosion, and warm tonal depth that responds well to patination. At this weight and dimension, the alloy provides the heft that a devotional piece of this significance warrants.
The antique green finish has been applied and worked across the surface to settle into the recessed areas, giving the ornamental details contrast and visual depth while the raised surfaces carry a slightly lighter tone. As with all handcrafted brass work, minor variation in texture, color distribution, and surface character from piece to piece is inherent to the process and reflects the individual hand that made it.
At 16.5 inches, this piece is suited for a dedicated puja room, a home altar, or a collector seeking a sculpturally significant brass work grounded in classical iconographic tradition.
