About This Piece
15″ Vishnu Standing | Handcrafted Brass | Antique Brown Finish
This 15-inch standing Vishnu idol is handcrafted in solid brass and finished in antique brown, measuring 15 inches in height, 5.5 inches in width, and 6 inches in depth, with a weight of approximately 5.1 kilograms. The figure is rendered in the classic four-armed standing posture, holding the shankha (conch), chakra (discus), gada (mace), and padma (lotus) — each attribute carrying specific iconographic meaning within the Vaishnava tradition. Garuda, Vishnu's vahana, is depicted at the base of the tiered pedestal, grounding the composition in devotional accuracy.
The casting captures a high level of surface detail across the crown, facial features, jewelry, and draped lower garment. The expression is calm and composed, consistent with the classical temple sculpture idiom. Ornamental scrollwork frames the figure on either side, and the layered pedestal features fine relief work that reflects the structured approach of traditional South Indian bronze iconography. Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, requiring sustained skill at every stage — from the initial wax modeling to the final surface treatment.
In Hindu tradition, Vishnu is the preserver among the Trimurti, associated with dharma, cosmic order, and the protection of all living beings. The four attributes he carries are not decorative — each represents a quality integral to his role: the conch calls creation into being, the discus enforces order, the mace signifies strength, and the lotus represents spiritual purity and liberation.
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc that has been central to Indian devotional metalwork for centuries. It holds fine detail well during casting, develops a warm tone over time, and remains structurally stable across decades when properly maintained. The antique brown finish applied here deepens the surface relief and gives the piece a patina consistent with aged temple bronzes.
Because this piece is individually handcrafted, natural variation in tone, surface texture, and fine detailing should be expected and is considered a mark of authenticity. This idol is suited to a dedicated puja room, a home altar, or as a considered gift for occasions such as housewarmings, weddings, or Vaikunta Ekadashi.
