About This Piece
15″ Ornamental Elephant Wall Brackets for Home Décor | Handcrafted Wood Carving
This is a pair of handcrafted wooden wall brackets, each measuring 15 inches in height and 9 inches in width, carved from Vaagai wood and finished in an antique colour palette of ochre gold, deep green, terracotta, and silver-grey.
Each bracket is structured in a layered architectural form, with a seated elephant figure positioned at the center as the primary carved element. The elephants are rendered with rounded, naturalistic bodies, ornamental headgear, and raised trunks, capturing a posture associated with ceremonial dignity rather than movement. Above each elephant, a pair of birds — likely parrots — face each other amid foliage and floral motifs, carved in relief against an arched upper frame. The lower section features stepped corbel detailing with lotus-inspired carvings, a form drawn directly from classical South Indian temple architecture. The carving throughout is deep-cut, with clearly defined edges that hold the painted finish well across every layer.
In Indian temple tradition, elephants flanking entryways or supporting structural elements carry layered meaning — they represent Gaja Lakshmi, auspiciousness at thresholds, and the steadiness that supports what is held above. Paired birds in temple iconography frequently signify harmony and the presence of the sacred. Together, the composition reads as a visual benediction, rooted in a carving tradition that architects entire sanctum facades around these same motifs.
Vaagai wood is a dense, close-grained hardwood valued in traditional South Indian carving for its ability to hold fine detail across both shallow and deep relief work. It is resistant to warping and accepts pigment finishes without losing surface definition over time, making it well suited to pieces intended for long-term display.
The antique colour finish is applied by hand, layering pigment to simulate the depth of aged temple carvings. Because both brackets are individually carved and painted, there will be natural variation in tone, texture, and fine detailing between pieces and from the product images shown.
These brackets suit placement on either side of a doorway, at wall corners in a living or prayer room, or as a framing pair for a home altar niche.
