Celebrate Shiva’s cosmic dance with this 13-inch Nataraja in a classic antique finish. The sculpture captures the Ananda Tandava—creation, preservation, and dissolution—within the flaming aureole. Shiva’s right hand offers abhaya (fearlessness), the left keeps the rhythm with the damaru, the upper hand bears agni (transformation), and the foot on Apasmara dispels ignorance. A temple-style pedestal and crisp detailing on the crown, ornaments, and flowing locks make it a striking centerpiece for altars or living rooms.Care: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth; avoid chemicals to preserve the patina. Note: At Cosmic Studio, every sculpture is individually handcrafted, ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike. Minor variations in color, texture, and detailing are a natural result of the artisanal process and are considered marks of authenticity. These unique characteristics, along with potential differences in lighting and screen displays, may cause the product to appear slightly different from the images shown.

About This Piece

13″ Divine Nataraja | Handcrafted Brass | Dull Green Finish

This 13-inch Nataraja is a handcrafted brass sculpture depicting Shiva in the Ananda Tandava, the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and dissolution, measuring 13 inches in height, 10 inches in width, and 4 inches in depth, with a finished weight of 3,400 grams. The piece is rendered in a dull green antique finish that gives it the aged, temple-worn quality associated with classical South Indian bronze traditions.

The sculpture is cast and finished by hand, a process that demands close attention to iconographic precision. The figure stands on one leg atop Apasmara, the dwarf figure representing ignorance, with the four arms positioned according to canonical form: the lower right hand raised in abhaya mudra offering fearlessness, the upper right holding the damaru whose rhythm marks cosmic time, the upper left bearing agni representing transformative fire, and the lower left pointing downward toward the lifted foot. The elaborately worked crown, cascading jata, and stacked ornamental detailing across the torso and limbs show the level of carving involved in finishing a piece of this complexity. The flaming prabhamandala encircling the figure carries individually formed flame points around its full circumference. The tiered lotus pedestal beneath adds structural weight and iconographic grounding to the composition.

In Indian philosophical and devotional tradition, Nataraja represents Shiva as the lord of dance and the governing force of cyclical time. The image encodes within a single form the ideas of creation, sustenance, destruction, concealment, and liberation, making it one of the most theologically layered forms in Hindu iconography.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc prized for its density, warm tonal quality, and resistance to corrosion. It has served as the preferred material for Indian devotional metalwork for centuries, holding fine detail well and aging with character over time.

The dull green finish on this piece is applied by hand to approximate the patina of aged metal. As with all handcrafted work, individual pieces will carry natural variation in the depth of the green tone and surface texture. This sculpture suits a dedicated puja room, a home altar, or as a considered gift for collectors of classical Indian art.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
