About This Piece

12″ Raja Alangara Murugan (Palani) | Handcrafted Brass | Antique Brass Finish

This 12-inch Raja Alangara Murugan idol depicts Lord Murugan in a composed standing posture, cast in solid brass and finished in a rich antique brown. The sculpture measures 12 inches in height, 4 inches in width, and 4 inches in depth, and weighs 3 kilograms — dimensions that give it a substantial, grounded presence. It follows the iconographic tradition of Palani Murugan, one of the most revered forms of the deity in South Indian devotional practice.

The figure has been shaped through a traditional casting process that demands considerable skill in both the initial form and the finishing. The surface carries fine incised detailing across the crown, chest ornaments, waistband, and lower garments — work that is done by hand and reflects close familiarity with classical temple iconography. Murugan stands holding what appears to be his vel, the sacred spear, in one hand, while the other hand is extended in a gesture of grace. The layered crown, the facial expression of calm authority, and the structured pleating of the dhoti all align with the Raja Alangara form — the regal, ornamented aspect of the deity as celebrated in the Palani tradition.

In Indian spiritual tradition, Lord Murugan is revered as the deity of wisdom, inner discipline, and purposeful action. The Palani form specifically emphasises his self-contained authority — a quality that devotees seek in daily prayer and contemplation.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, long valued in Indian craft traditions for its weight, workability, and warm metallic tone. It holds fine detail well and, when properly maintained, retains its appearance over decades without deterioration.

The antique brown finish gives this piece a depth that distinguishes it from polished brass — the surface reads darker in the recessed areas and warmer at the raised details, creating a naturally aged appearance. As with all handcrafted work, slight variation in tone and surface texture from piece to piece is expected and inherent to the process.

This idol is suited for a dedicated puja room, a home altar, or as a considered gift for a devotee of Murugan.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
