About This Piece
12″ Majestic Ganesha Idol for Pooja & Home Décor | Handcrafted Wood Carving
This 12-inch Ganesha idol, measuring 12" H × 7.5" W × 3" D and weighing 1,100 grams, is hand-carved from Vaagai wood in the seated Lalitasana posture, with the figure resting on a tiered lotus-petal base that carries a carved floral motif at its center front.
The carving work on this piece is considerable in its depth and precision. Ganesha is depicted with four arms, each holding a distinct attribute, with the trunk curving gently downward toward the lower right hand. The crown is layered and structured, the face carries a composed, forward-facing expression, and the ears are large and fanned outward in the classical South Indian iconographic style. The ornamentation across the chest, wrists, and waistband is rendered in relief with clean definition, and the musculature of the figure — the rounded abdomen, the folded legs, the slight forward lean of the torso — reflects a practiced understanding of the traditional form. At the base, a small mouse, Ganesha's vahana, is carved into the right corner of the plinth, a detail consistent with correct iconographic placement.
Ganesha is understood across Hindu tradition as the deity invoked at beginnings — of journeys, undertakings, ceremonies, and new phases of life. He is the remover of obstacles and the lord of intellect and wisdom, and his iconography follows a canon refined over more than a thousand years of temple sculpture and devotional practice.
Vaagai wood is a dense, close-grained hardwood that has long been used in South Indian wood carving for its structural stability and its ability to hold fine detail through chiseling and finishing. It does not warp easily, which makes it well suited to figural sculpture of this scale.
The finish is a deep, darkened wood tone — almost an espresso brown — achieved through a natural oiling and buffing process that brings out the grain while giving the surface a low sheen. Because each piece is individually carved by hand, minor variation in surface texture, tone depth, and fine detailing from one piece to the next is expected and inherent to the process.
This idol is suited for a home puja room, a dedicated altar space, or as a considered gift for housewarmings, festivals, or milestone occasions where a piece of durable, traditional craftsmanship is appropriate.
