About This Piece
12″ Dancing Ardhanareeswar | Handcrafted Brass | Dull Green Finish
This 12-inch standing Ardhanareeshwara idol is handcrafted in brass and finished with an antique green patina, measuring 12 inches in height, 5.5 inches in width, and 4.5 inches in depth, with a weight of 3100 grams. The form depicts the composite deity in a dynamic dancing posture, with one leg raised and the body mid-turn, rendered with four arms that carry attributes and gesture in mudras consistent with classical iconographic tradition. The figure stands on a tiered lotus base with petal detailing that anchors the movement of the form.
The sculpture is cast using traditional brass-working methods, with hand-finishing applied to bring out the surface detail across the crown, jewelry, waistband, and ornamental anklets. The ornamentation across the torso and limbs is rendered with fine surface engraving, and the tall, layered crown carries a crescent element consistent with Shaiva iconography. The facial expression is composed and inward, reflecting the meditative quality expected in this iconographic form. The degree of detail in the jewelry and textile patterning on the lower garment indicates skilled hand-finishing at the surface level.
Ardhanareeshwara represents the inseparable union of Shiva and Parvati, the masculine and feminine principles held as one form. This composite icon appears across Hindu scripture and temple sculpture as a symbol of wholeness, the understanding that creation itself depends on the balance of opposing but complementary forces. The dancing posture adds a further dimension, referencing the cosmic rhythm through which existence moves and is sustained.
Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been used in Indian devotional metalwork for centuries. It carries density and structural stability that make it well-suited to sculptural detail, and its warm base tone responds well to patination processes. The antique green finish visible on this piece has been applied to simulate aged temple bronze, lending the surface depth and a layered tonal quality across the raised and recessed areas.
Because each piece is individually cast and finished by hand, natural variation in the depth of the green patina and surface texture should be expected. No two finished sculptures will be identical. This idol suits a puja room, a meditation space, or a collector's display where considered craftsmanship is the primary criterion.
