About This Piece

11″ Rishabadevar | Handcrafted Brass | Antique Brown Finish

This 11.5-inch Rishabadevar sculpture is handcrafted in brass by traditional artisans in Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu, and finished in a deep antique brown patina that closely echoes the aged bronze sculptures of the Chola period.

The piece is made using the lost-wax casting method, known in Tamil as the madhuchchishtavidhana technique, which has been practiced in Swamimalai for generations. A wax model is first carved with precise detail, encased in clay, and then replaced with molten brass through a single pour — a process that demands both technical mastery and intimate knowledge of the form. The level of surface detailing visible on this figure, from the layered jewelry at the chest and arms to the finely pleated lower garment and ornate lotus pedestal base, reflects the hours of hand-finishing applied after casting.

Rishabadevar, also known as Adinatha, is the first Tirthankara in the Jain tradition and a figure of profound reverence across South India. His iconography consistently emphasizes composure and renunciation. This sculpture captures that quality through a gently contrapposto stance — weight shifted to one side, one arm lowered with an open palm, the posture communicating stillness without rigidity. The face carries a composed, inward expression consistent with classical Chola-period aesthetics.

The sculpture is cast in solid brass, weighing 2,700 grams, which gives it a substantial, grounded presence. Brass at this weight and composition holds surface treatment well and is well-suited to both daily worship environments and climate-controlled display settings.

The antique brown finish is applied by hand and develops subtle tonal variation across raised surfaces and recessed areas, giving the piece visual depth. Because each sculpture is individually cast and finished, minor differences in surface tone, texture, and fine detailing will occur between pieces — these are not imperfections but markers of genuine handcraft.

This sculpture is suited to a home puja room, a Jain altar, or a collector's arrangement of classical South Indian religious art.

How We Pack It

Every idol is individually wrapped in soft cloth and nestled in foam casing inside a double-walled corrugated box. We have shipped to 25+ countries without a single breakage complaint.

Orders are dispatched within 2-3 working days. Domestic delivery takes 5-7 days. International shipping takes 10-15 working days via tracked courier.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
