3.5″ Varahi Amman Idol | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina

This 3.5-inch Varahi Amman idol is cast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian five-metal alloy comprising copper, zinc, tin, gold, and silver, and measures 9cm in height with a footprint of 6cm by 6cm, weighing 250 grams.

The figure is rendered in lalitasana, seated with one leg folded and the other pendant, resting on a tiered lotus pedestal with clearly articulated petals along its base. She carries four arms: two raised hands holding a discus and what appears to be a conch or small ritual object, while the lower hands extend in mudras directed toward the devotee. The boar face, a defining iconographic feature of Varahi, is sculpted with a distinct upturned snout, and the crown rises in a stacked, tapering form consistent with classical South Indian temple iconography. Ornamentation across the chest, arms, and waist is cast with fine detail, and the overall proportions, despite the compact scale, carry the formal weight of larger temple forms. Achieving this level of iconographic precision at 3.5 inches requires considerable skill in both wax modeling and finish work, as the detail must survive both the casting process and the application of surface treatment without losing definition.

Varahi is counted among the Saptamatrikas, the seven mother goddesses of the Shakta tradition, and is considered among the most powerful of the group. She is worshipped as a fierce protector who removes obstacles, wards off negative forces, and confers stability and courage on her devotees. Her boar-headed form connects her to Varaha, the third avatar of Vishnu, and she carries associated attributes of strength and earth energy.

Panchaloha has been the prescribed alloy for South Indian devotional sculpture for over a millennium, valued for its density, workability, and the belief that the combination of five metals carries inherent auspiciousness. The material develops a stable surface over time and holds fine casting detail well.

This piece carries an antique green patina, visible across the raised surfaces and recessed detailing, with warmer copper tones showing through at the high points of the casting. Because each idol is individually handcrafted, minor variation in the depth and distribution of the patina is natural and expected.
