About This Piece

9″ Cosmic Nataraja | Handcrafted Brass | Stone Gray Finish

This 9-inch handcrafted brass Nataraja sculpture measures 9" H x 7" W x 2.5" D and weighs 1,300 grams, rendered in a stone gray finish that gives the piece the visual weight and depth of aged temple bronze.

The sculpture follows the classical Ananda Tandava iconography — Shiva depicted mid-dance, with four arms extended in precise gesture, the upper right holding what appears to be a damaru, the lower right raised in abhaya mudra, while the left arms extend outward and across the body in dynamic counterbalance. One leg is raised, the other planted firmly on the figure of Apasmara, the dwarf figure of ignorance, visible at the base. The jata — the matted, fanned crown of locks — spreads dramatically behind the head, rendered with fine surface detail. The entire form is enclosed within a prabhavali, a circular halo of flames whose tips catch subtle warm brass tones against the prevailing gray. The pedestal is tiered and carved with lotus petal motifs, maintaining the iconographic integrity of the South Indian Nataraja tradition. Every element — the flared jata, the positioned limbs, the flame ring — has been individually worked by hand, with the surface detail achieved through patient post-cast finishing rather than mechanical reproduction.

In Indian philosophical tradition, Nataraja encodes a complete cosmology. The dance is Tandava — the rhythm of creation, sustenance, and dissolution. The flame ring is the universe in perpetual cycle. The raised foot offers liberation. The form has been central to Shaivite devotion for over a millennium and remains one of the most studied examples of sacred iconography in Indian art history.

Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been the material of choice for Indian devotional sculpture for centuries. It holds fine detail well, develops character over time, and carries a density that communicates permanence.

The stone gray finish applied here is matte and textured, lending the piece an antiqued solemnity. Because each sculpture is cast and finished by hand, no two pieces are identical — minor variation in tone, surface texture, and detailing is inherent to the process.

This piece suits a dedicated puja space, a home altar, a curated shelf, or as a considered gift for someone who values both spiritual meaning and craft.

How We Pack It

Every idol is individually wrapped in soft cloth and nestled in foam casing inside a double-walled corrugated box. We have shipped to 25+ countries without a single breakage complaint.

Orders are dispatched within 2-3 working days. Domestic delivery takes 5-7 days. International shipping takes 10-15 working days via tracked courier.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
