About This Piece

8″ Dattatreya | Handcrafted Brass | Brown Finish

This 8.5-inch handcrafted brass sculpture depicts Dattatreya in his classical three-faced form, standing with composed authority on a rectangular base, flanked by two sacred cows rendered with careful anatomical detail. The piece measures 8.5 inches in height, 7.5 inches in width, and 4.5 inches in depth, and weighs 3,800 grams — a substantial, dense casting that communicates quality before it is even examined closely.

The sculpture has been produced through traditional lost-wax casting, a technique that allows the craftsperson to achieve the level of surface detail visible across the three faces, the layered ornamentation at the chest and neck, and the flowing drapery of the lower garment. Each face carries a distinct but harmonious expression — calm, inward, and considered. The multiple arms hold their attributes with precision, including what appears to be a trishul and a kamandalu, consistent with the iconographic canon for this form. The hands and fingers show individual shaping, not rough approximation, which indicates the finishing work was done by hand after casting.

Dattatreya is one of the more philosophically significant deities in the Hindu tradition. He is understood as the simultaneous manifestation of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — the three primary forces of creation, preservation, and dissolution — unified within a single form. His presence is associated with Advaita Vedanta and the Nath tradition, and he is considered a guru-deity, a figure of direct transmission rather than ritual mediation. The sacred cows that accompany him represent dharmic abundance and care, while the dogs that sometimes appear in his iconography symbolize the four Vedas and the mastery of the senses.

Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been used in Indian ritual and devotional objects for centuries. It holds fine detail well during casting, resists corrosion over time, and develops a richer surface character with age. At 3,800 grams, this piece has the weight and solidity associated with heirloom-quality brasswork.

The finish is an antique brown patina, applied to deepen the surface and draw out the sculptural relief. In the image, the patina reads as a warm, dark brown with areas of lighter tone where the metal catches light across raised surfaces — the faces, the jewelry, and the folds of cloth. Because each piece is individually cast and finished by hand, minor variation in tone and texture between pieces is expected and inherent to the process.

This sculpture is suited to a dedicated puja room or home altar, a meditation space where a non-sectarian but deeply traditional form is appropriate, or a serious collection of classical Hindu devotional art. It also carries the weight — literally and contextually — to serve as a considered gift for someone who understands what they are receiving.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
