About This Piece

7″ Sacred Nandhi | Handcrafted Brass | Antique Green Finish

This 7-inch handcrafted brass Nandhi sculpture measures 7″H × 8.5″W × 6″D and weighs approximately 3,100 grams, presenting the sacred bull in a composed reclining posture on an ornately decorated rectangular base.

The figure has been cast and finished by hand, with surface ornamentation that covers nearly the entire body. The neck and chest area carry layered garland motifs rendered in fine relief, and the base is worked with repeating border patterns that reflect the iconographic vocabulary of classical South Indian temple sculpture. The eyes are calm and forward-facing, and the overall form conveys stillness rather than movement — consistent with how Nandhi is traditionally depicted in devotional contexts: seated in eternal attendance, facing the sanctum. The level of surface detail across the haunches, forehead, and base suggests this piece was worked in stages, with careful attention given to both the structural form and its decorative surface.

Nandhi holds a specific and significant position in Shaiva tradition. As the vahana and devoted attendant of Lord Shiva, Nandhi represents disciplined faith, strength held in service, and the quality of complete surrender to the divine. In Shiva temples, the Nandhi sculpture is always positioned facing the lingam — an orientation that carries deep meaning and is replicated in home shrines as well.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, valued in Indian craft traditions for its density, workability, and long-term durability. Its warm metallic tone responds well to patination techniques, which is why it has been the preferred material for devotional and decorative castings across centuries.

This piece carries an antique green finish, applied by hand to produce the layered, aged appearance visible across the body and base. The gold-toned detailing on the ornamentation remains more exposed, creating contrast against the darker ground. Because each piece is individually handcrafted, natural variation in the depth of finish, surface texture, and tonal distribution should be expected and is characteristic of the process.

This sculpture is suited for a dedicated puja room, a home Shiva shrine, or as a considered gift for someone with a serious connection to Shaiva devotion or traditional Indian craftsmanship.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
