About This Piece

6″ Raja Alangara Murugan Idol | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina

This 6-inch standing idol of Raja Alangara Murugan is cast in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian sacred alloy composed of copper, zinc, tin, gold, and silver, and finished in an antique green patina that gives the surface a weathered, temple-aged quality.

The idol is cast using traditional lost-wax methods that demand considerable skill at every stage — from the initial wax model to the final hand-finishing of surface detail. The figure stands upright in a composed, frontal posture on a tiered temple-style base, holding the Sengol, the divine scepter of authority, in one hand while the other rests at his hip in a gesture of calm command. The crown is layered and intricate, rising in the classical South Indian kirita mukuta style. Across the chest, arms, and waist, the carved jewelry — necklaces, armlets, a beaded belt, and draped garments — reflects the iconographic standard of the Raja Alangara form, meaning Murugan adorned as a sovereign. A small bird, likely a peacock feature, is visible at the top of the Sengol.

Lord Murugan is one of the most widely venerated deities in the South Indian tradition, regarded as the god of war, wisdom, and spiritual discipline. The Raja Alangara form specifically honours him as a celestial king — crowned, ornamented, and victorious — and is associated with courage, clarity of purpose, and protection from adversity.

Panchaloha has been the preferred material for consecrated South Indian idols for over a millennium. The inclusion of five metals is considered ritually significant, and the resulting alloy is dense, durable, and capable of holding fine surface detail without degrading over time.

The antique green finish develops through a controlled oxidation process applied to the surface, producing the characteristic verdigris tone visible across the idol while allowing warm brass-gold undertones to show through at raised points of detail. Because each piece is individually handcrafted, no two idols are identical — minor variation in tone, texture, and surface finish is expected and is a natural mark of the process.

At 350 grams and 6 inches tall, this idol is well suited to a home puja room, a personal altar, or as a considered gift for occasions such as Skanda Shashti, Karthigai Deepam, housewarmings, or weddings.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
