About This Piece

6″ Raja Alangara Murugan Idol | Handcrafted Panchaloha

This 6-inch Raja Alangara Murugan idol is handcrafted in Panchaloha, the traditional South Indian alloy composed of copper, zinc, tin, gold, and silver, and stands on a tiered temple-style pedestal base with carved detailing along its edges.

The figure follows the Raja Alangara iconographic tradition, which depicts Lord Murugan in full royal regalia rather than in his warrior aspect alone. The idol is cast and finished by hand, a process that demands precision at every stage — from the initial wax modeling and alloy pouring through to the surface finishing that brings out the ornamental detail. The crown is elaborate and layered, the chest adorned with multiple strands of jewelry, and the lower garments rendered with fine incised patterns that convey the weight and texture of draped cloth. In his right hand, Murugan holds the Sengol, the divine scepter that signifies righteous authority and divine order, while his left hand rests at his hip in a composed, commanding posture. The expression is serene and direct.

Lord Murugan is one of the most widely revered deities in South Indian tradition, regarded as the embodiment of courage, spiritual clarity, and protective grace. The Raja Alangara form specifically honors his sovereignty — the aspect of a divine king adorned and consecrated for worship.

Panchaloha has been the canonical material for South Indian temple iconography for centuries. The inclusion of five metals is considered auspicious, and the alloy is valued for its density, warm gold tone, and the way it holds fine surface work over time without degradation.

This piece carries a polished finish, giving the surface a bright, warm gold appearance that catches light evenly across the ornamental detail, as visible in the image. Because each idol is individually handcrafted, minor variation in tone, texture, and surface character from piece to piece is expected and inherent to the process.

At 350 grams and 6 inches tall, this idol is well suited to a home puja room, a personal altar, or as a considered gift for occasions such as Skanda Shashti, Karthigai Deepam, or a housewarming.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
