This Nataraja idol, cast in super fine brass, stands 6 inches (15 cm) tall, 5 inches (12.5 cm) wide, and 2.5 inches (7 cm) deep, weighing approximately 400 g, and depicts Shiva in the Nataraja form — the cosmic dancer — four-armed, in the anandatandava pose, enclosed within a large circular ring of flame, standing on one leg above a prostrate figure at the base.

The sculpture is produced using traditional lost-wax casting, a technique that makes the density of ornamentation across this figure possible at this scale. Shiva is shown with four arms extended outward at varied angles within the halo: the upper right holds a small damaru, the upper left carries a tongue of flame, the lower right is extended in the abhaya gesture, and the lower left sweeps across the raised left leg in the gajahasta gesture. A serpent coils around the lower right forearm. The figure is dressed in full ceremonial regalia — layered necklaces, armlets, wristlets, and a lower garment with embellished borders rendered in fine relief. The jata — the matted hair crown — fans outward elaborately to either side of the head, worked with individual strands and ornamental elements, and is surmounted by a crescent and a central form that rises into the topmost arc of the ring. The prabhamandala, the encircling ring, is worked throughout its circumference with a repeating beaded border and radiating flame tips, each one individually resolved. At the base, Apasmara — the figure of ignorance and heedlessness — is pressed underfoot, clearly rendered with a raised head and crouching form. The tiered pedestal below is worked with geometric relief panels and a beaded upper register. The face carries a composed, inward expression. Super fine brass casting is what allows the flame tips, jata strands, jewelry detail, and the relief work across the pedestal to remain crisp and legible throughout the composition at this scale.

Nataraja is among the most philosophically dense iconographic forms in the Hindu tradition. The dance he performs, the anandatandava or dance of bliss, represents the five acts of Shiva: creation, preservation, dissolution, concealment, and grace. The ring of fire is the cosmos itself. The damaru in his hand beats the rhythm of creation; the flame signals dissolution. His raised foot offers liberation, and the foot planted on Apasmara represents the suppression of ignorance that prevents spiritual understanding. This form has been central to Shaiva theology, temple iconography, and classical South Indian bronze-casting tradition for well over a thousand years, and remains one of the most studied and revered compositions in Indian sacred art.

Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been central to Indian devotional metalwork for centuries. It holds fine cast detail with fidelity, carries a warm tonal depth that develops with time, and is structurally durable — qualities that make it suited for both active ritual use and long-term display.

This piece carries a polished finish, visible in the warm bright gold tone across the raised surfaces of the face, jata crown, jewelry, flame tips, and pedestal relief, with darkened recesses in the ornamental channels, ring border, garment folds, and the figure of Apasmara that give the composition its definition and depth. Handcrafted pieces carry natural variation in surface texture and tone between individual sculptures.

This Nataraja idol is well suited for a home puja room, a personal altar, gifting on occasions such as Mahashivaratri or housewarmings, or as a collector's piece in classical Indian devotional sculpture.

Note: At Cosmic Studio, every sculpture is individually handcrafted, ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike. Minor variations in color, texture, and detailing are a natural result of the artisanal process and are considered marks of authenticity. These unique characteristics, along with potential differences in lighting and screen displays, may cause the product to appear slightly different from the images shown.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
