About This Piece
4″ Lord Dhanvantari Idol | Handcrafted Panchaloha | Green Patina
This 4-inch standing idol depicts Lord Dhanvantari, handcrafted in Panchaloha — the traditional South Indian alloy composed of copper, zinc, tin, silver, and gold — and finished in an antique green patina. The piece measures 4 inches in height, 2.25 inches in width, and 1.5 inches in depth, and weighs approximately 200 grams.
The idol is cast using traditional lost-wax techniques that have been practiced in South Indian temple sculpture for centuries. The four-armed form stands upright on a tiered, temple-style base with visible detailing across the plinth. The upper two hands hold the shankha and chakra, while the lower hands carry the amrita kalasha and a bundle of healing herb. The crown rises in a stacked, cylindrical form consistent with classical Vaishnava iconography. The face is calm and frontal, with an expression of composed benevolence. Ornamentation across the chest, arms, and lower garment is rendered with clear definition, notable given the compact scale of the piece.
Dhanvantari is revered in Hindu tradition as the physician of the gods and the originator of Ayurveda. He is considered an avatar of Lord Vishnu and is invoked for healing, longevity, and protection from illness. His iconography — particularly the amrita kalasha containing the nectar of immortality — makes him a significant presence in homes, clinics, and wellness spaces.
Panchaloha has been the material of choice for consecrated South Indian temple idols for over a thousand years. The inclusion of five metals is considered both spiritually auspicious and practically sound, producing an alloy that is dense, workable, and resistant to degradation over time.
The antique green patina on this piece, visible clearly in the photograph, gives the surface a weathered, aged quality while warm bronze tones show through at the raised details of the crown and ornamentation. Because each piece is individually hand-cast and finished, natural variation in color depth and surface texture is inherent to the process.
This idol is suited for a home puja room, a personal altar, a medical or wellness practice, or as a considered gift for anyone in the healing professions.
