About This Piece

3″ Adi Shankaracharya | Handcrafted Panchaloha

This 3-inch Adi Shankaracharya idol, measuring 7.5cm in height, is handcrafted in Panchaloha, the traditional five-metal alloy used in South Indian temple sculpture for over a millennium. The figure is depicted seated in a composed cross-legged posture, holding a danda staff in one hand while the other rests in a gesture of stillness and inner absorption. The face carries a calm, focused expression — neither austere nor ornamented with excess — consistent with how the great Advaita philosopher and reformer has been iconographically rendered across centuries of devotional tradition.

The sculpture is produced through a labour-intensive lost-wax casting process, in which a wax model is carefully formed, encased in clay, fired to eliminate the wax, and then filled with molten alloy. After casting, the surface is worked by hand to refine the facial features, drapery folds, and the fine detailing on the necklace and chest. The result is a compact form with surface definition that speaks to practiced hand-finishing rather than mechanical production.

Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century philosopher-monk, is revered as the consolidator of Advaita Vedanta — the doctrine of non-duality — and is credited with re-establishing the intellectual and spiritual foundations of Hindu thought across the subcontinent. His form is traditionally represented as a renunciant scholar, serene in bearing and purposeful in gesture, qualities this casting renders with restraint and accuracy.

Panchaloha is an alloy comprising gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron in proportions considered sacred in Agamic tradition. It is prized for its density, warm golden tone, and the ritual significance ascribed to its composition, which distinguishes it from standard brass or bronze castings used in secular decorative work.

This piece carries a polished finish, visible in the bright, warm golden tone across the surface. As with all handcrafted work, minor variation in tone, surface texture, and detail rendering from piece to piece is expected and reflects authentic hand production.

At 380 grams, this idol is well-suited for a study desk, personal puja space, home altar, or as a considered gift for someone engaged seriously with Vedantic thought or traditional Indian philosophy.

How We Pack It

Every idol is individually wrapped in soft cloth and nestled in foam casing inside a double-walled corrugated box. We have shipped to 25+ countries without a single breakage complaint.

Orders are dispatched within 2-3 working days. Domestic delivery takes 5-7 days. International shipping takes 10-15 working days via tracked courier.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
