This handcrafted brass Ardhanarishvara sculpture stands 26.5 inches (68 cm) tall, 12 inches (31 cm) wide, and 9 inches (23 cm) deep, weighing approximately 13.5 kg, and is finished in an antique brown treatment that settles a rich, even oxidation across the full figure while allowing warmer brass tones to surface along the raised edges of the ornamentation, the crown, and the lotus base.

The figure is cast in brass and finished by hand across a composition of sustained iconographic complexity. The form stands upright in a composed, weight-bearing posture on a tiered lotus base whose petals are worked in full, clearly articulated relief with scrolling foliate borders encircling the plinth below. Four arms extend from the figure — the upper right hand holds a long-handled object, likely a damaru or trident finial, worked with fine incised detail along its shaft; the lower right hand rests open in a gesture of offering; the upper left arm extends outward with a gesture of grace; and the lower left hand hangs relaxed at the side. The torso and limbs are ornamented extensively: layered necklaces, shoulder ornaments, armlets, and a waist girdle with a central decorative clasp are all rendered with close hand-chasing that sustains fine line quality across curved, three-dimensional surfaces. The lower garment — covering the left leg — is worked with dense scrolling floral and foliate relief, each motif individually incised with visible precision. The tall, tiered crown is built up in multiple registers of foliate and jewelled relief, flanked by curling hair that falls to the shoulders. The face is calm and symmetrical, with a composed expression, defined brow, and full features consistent with the classical South Indian sculptural tradition of this form.

Ardhanarishvara is the composite form of Shiva and Parvati — the right half expressing the masculine, the left the feminine — representing the inseparable unity of Purusha and Prakriti, the cosmic principles of consciousness and matter. This form carries deep theological significance within Shaiva tradition, affirming that creation itself arises from the union of these two principles. Its presence in devotional metalwork reflects both philosophical understanding and the long tradition of sculpting the divine in its most complete expression.

Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been used in Indian devotional and decorative objects for centuries. It carries meaningful weight relative to its size, accepts intricate casting detail reliably, and provides a warm, durable surface well suited to oxidized finishes that hold and deepen over time.

The antique brown finish applies a deep, settled oxidation across the full sculpture — figure, crown, and lotus base — while warmer brass tones surface at the raised areas of the ornamentation and garment relief, producing a tonal depth consistent with aged ceremonial metalwork. Handcrafted pieces carry natural variation in the depth and distribution of this finish across the surface.

This sculpture is suited for a puja room, home altar, or as a collector's piece in classical South Indian devotional brass forms. It also serves as a considered gift for housewarmings, religious occasions, and those with a serious interest in Indian iconographic metalwork.

Note: At Cosmic Studio, every sculpture is individually handcrafted, ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike. Minor variations in color, texture, and detailing are a natural result of the artisanal process and are considered marks of authenticity. These unique characteristics, along with potential differences in lighting and screen displays, may cause the product to appear slightly different from the images shown.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
