About This Piece

18″ Ornate Gajayazhi Wall Brackets for Home Décor | Handcrafted Wood Carving

This is a pair of 18-inch handcrafted wooden wall brackets depicting the Gajayazhi, a mythical composite creature from South Indian temple iconography, carved from Vaagai wood and finished in a deep, warm brown wood tone. Each bracket measures 18 inches in height, 8 inches in width, and 2.5 inches in depth, and the pair together weighs approximately 3900 grams.

The Gajayazhi form visible in these brackets is rendered in a dynamic, upward-curving posture with the body arching from a flat base bracket at the bottom to a flat capital bracket at the top, designed to bear structural or decorative weight in the tradition of temple corbels. The figure carries a prominent textured sphere — carved with a crosshatch pattern suggesting a decorative orb — held within its limbs, while large fan-like ear forms flare outward on either side. Flowing foliage and scrollwork fill the lower body of the bracket, and fine border detailing runs along both the base and capital. The depth of the carving is considerable, with forms that read clearly even from a distance.

In South Indian temple architecture, the Yali — and its hybrid forms such as the Gajayazhi, which combines the elephant's mass with the Yali's fierce authority — appears as a guardian figure on pillars, doorways, and bracket supports. It represents controlled power, royal protection, and the threshold between the sacred and the worldly. Placing such forms at an entrance or within a devotional space follows a tradition rooted in temple design.

Vaagai wood is a dense, close-grained hardwood long used in South Indian woodcarving for its stability, workability, and ability to hold fine detail without splitting. It accepts finishing well and develops character over time. The warm, dark brown finish on these brackets deepens the shadow lines between carved elements, making the ornamentation read with clarity and weight.

Because these brackets are individually hand-carved, minor variation in tone, texture, and carved detail between the two pieces and from the images shown is inherent to the process. These brackets are well-suited to a grand entrance, a feature wall, a puja room threshold, or as a considered acquisition for a collector of traditional South Indian architectural woodcraft.

How We Pack It

Every idol is individually wrapped in soft cloth and nestled in foam casing inside a double-walled corrugated box. We have shipped to 25+ countries without a single breakage complaint.

Orders are dispatched within 2-3 working days. Domestic delivery takes 5-7 days. International shipping takes 10-15 working days via tracked courier.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
