This 17.5-inch Nataraja in solid brass depicts Shiva mid-dance within a fully cast prabhavali arch, measuring 10.5 inches wide and 5 inches deep, and weighing 6,400 grams. The sculpture is rendered in the Ananda Tandava iconographic tradition, one of the most codified forms in Indian sacred art, where every gesture and posture carries precise theological meaning.
The figure is cast and hand-finished with considerable attention to surface detail. The prabhavali — the circular arch of flames surrounding the form — is carved with individual flame points along its outer ring and layered scrollwork at its base corners, where guardian figures are visible. The crown rises in a tall, tiered kirita mukuta with fine linear detailing, and the hair flows outward in matted locks. Four arms are positioned in distinct mudras: the lower right hand extends in abhaya, the lower left gestures downward in gajahasta rhythm, the upper left holds the damaru, and the upper right bears agni. The right foot is raised in the classic tribhanga posture while the left presses firmly onto Apasmara, the figure representing spiritual ignorance. The lotus pedestal and stepped rectangular base are engraved with traditional motifs consistent with temple-style casting.
Nataraja represents Shiva's role as the cosmic dancer whose movement sustains the cycles of creation, preservation, and dissolution. The form has been central to Shaivite devotion for over a millennium and remains among the most theologically layered representations in Hindu iconography.
Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been the preferred material for Indian devotional sculpture for centuries. Its density allows for fine cast detail, its warm golden undertone holds finish well, and its structural integrity ensures pieces age without degradation.
The antique brown finish gives the surface a deep, aged warmth visible across the arch, figure, and base — darkening recessed areas and allowing raised detail to read clearly. As with all handcrafted pieces, minor variation in tone, texture, and surface character between pieces is inherent to the process.
This sculpture is well suited to a dedicated puja room, a home altar, a dance studio, or as a considered gift for practitioners, collectors, and those with a serious interest in Indian devotional art.
Handcrafted — every piece varies by ±3%. That variation is the mark of a human hand, not a flaw.
