13″ Cosmic Nataraja | Antique Brown Finish | Handcrafted Brass
This 13-inch Nataraja idol, measuring 13" H x 10" W x 4" D and weighing 3,300 grams, is cast in solid brass and finished in antique brown. The form depicts Shiva as Nataraja — Lord of Dance — performing the Ananda Tandava, the dance of bliss, within a circular aureole ringed with flame-tipped projections.
The sculpture is handcrafted using traditional casting techniques that require considerable skill to execute at this level of detail. The four arms are positioned with precision: one hand raised in abhaya mudra granting fearlessness, one holding the damaru whose rhythm marks the pulse of creation, one bearing the flame of transformation, and the fourth gesturing downward toward the raised foot. The flowing matted locks of Shiva fan outward symmetrically, and the face carries a composed, serene expression. Shiva's right foot stands firmly on the figure of Apasmara, the dwarf demon representing ignorance and heedlessness. The tiered temple-style pedestal beneath the figure is engraved with scrollwork and floral motifs, consistent with classical iconographic conventions. Finishing this piece requires careful hand-chasing to bring out the fine surface detail across the prabhavali, the ornaments, the anklets, and the musculature of the figure.
In Indian devotional tradition, the Nataraja form encodes the five acts of Shiva — creation, preservation, dissolution, concealment, and grace — within a single gesture of movement. It is among the most philosophically layered forms in Hindu iconography, recognized equally as sacred image and as one of the great sculptural achievements of classical Indian art.
