About This Piece

12″ Dancing Ardhanareeswar | Handcrafted Brass | Green Finish

This 12-inch Ardhanareeshwara sculpture depicts the composite form of Shiva and Parvati in a dancing posture, handcrafted in solid brass and finished in antique green. The piece measures 12 inches in height, 5.5 inches in width, and 4.5 inches in depth, and weighs 3,100 grams — a substantial, dense casting that reflects the quality of the metal and the care of the work.

The figure is rendered with four arms, the body caught mid-movement in a dynamic contrapposto stance, one leg raised and the torso gently turned — a posture that demands precise control during both the wax modeling and casting stages. The surface carries a high level of chased detail: layered crown with a crescent moon finial, elaborate necklaces and armlets, a finely worked waistband, and an ornate circular lotus base with petal molding around its perimeter. The facial expression is composed and serene, which is consistent with classical South Indian iconographic standards for this form. This level of surface work is achieved through hand-chasing and engraving after casting, not through mold detail alone.

Ardhanareeshwara is one of the more philosophically significant forms in the Shaiva tradition. The right half represents Shiva — associated with pure consciousness, stillness, and the masculine principle — while the left half represents Shakti, or Parvati, embodying energy, movement, and the feminine principle. Together they express the idea that creation itself arises from the union of these complementary forces, and that neither is complete without the other.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, valued for its weight, warm natural tone, and resistance to corrosion. It has been the preferred material for Indian devotional sculpture for centuries, capable of holding fine surface detail without degrading over time.

The antique green finish is applied by hand, building up a patina that reads as deep teal against the raised brass-toned detailing. Because the finish is applied individually to each piece, there will be natural variation in depth of color and texture from one sculpture to the next.

At 3.1 kilograms, this piece has the presence and weight suited to a puja room, a meditation altar, or a serious collector's display.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
