About This Piece

11″ Gaja Samhara Moorthy | Handcrafted Brass | Brown Finish

This 11.5-inch handcrafted brass sculpture depicts Nataraja — Lord Shiva in the cosmic dance form known as Ananda Tandava — rendered with four arms, a raised left leg, and the characteristic prabhavali, the arching ring of flame that encircles the figure. The piece measures 11.5 inches in height, 8.5 inches in width, and 3.5 inches in depth, and weighs 3,800 grams, giving it substantial presence and stability on any surface.

The casting captures a high degree of iconographic precision. Shiva stands balanced on his right leg atop a lotus pedestal with a tiered base detailed with floral relief work. His upper right hand holds the damaru, his lower right is in abhaya mudra, the upper left carries what appears to be a flame, and the lower left points toward the raised foot — each gesture carrying specific meaning within the Nataraja canon. The prabhavali is ringed with individual flame tips, each separately finished, and the cobra at the waist, the flowing jata, and the ornamental crown are all rendered with visible care. The expression on the face is calm and composed, consistent with the classical South Indian representation of this form.

Nataraja is one of the most theologically complete forms in the Shaiva tradition. The dance represents the five cosmic acts — creation, preservation, dissolution, concealment, and liberation — encoded into a single, unified gesture. It has been a central image in South Indian temple sculpture for over a thousand years, particularly within the Chola tradition.

Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been the primary material for Indian devotional metalwork for centuries. It is dense, resistant to corrosion, and develops a rich, layered tone over time that no synthetic material replicates. At 3,800 grams, this piece carries the weight that serious brass casting demands.

The finish is a deep antique brown, applied and burnished by hand. Highlighted areas on the flame tips, base relief, and ornamental details retain a warmer, lighter tone against the darker body — a contrast that is visible in the image and characteristic of this finishing technique. As with all handcrafted pieces, minor variation in tone and surface texture between individual sculptures is inherent to the process.

This sculpture is suited for a home puja room, a meditation space, or the collection of someone who values classical Indian devotional art in its traditional material form.

How We Pack It

Every idol is individually wrapped in soft cloth and nestled in foam casing inside a double-walled corrugated box. We have shipped to 25+ countries without a single breakage complaint.

Orders are dispatched within 2-3 working days. Domestic delivery takes 5-7 days. International shipping takes 10-15 working days via tracked courier.

How to Care For It

Wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, acidic solutions, or abrasive pads. For occasional deep cleaning, use warm water and mild soap — dry immediately after.

Brass and Panchaloha naturally develop patina over time. If you prefer the original finish, apply a thin coat of coconut oil monthly.
