This handcrafted brass Panchurali mask stands 10 inches (25 cm) tall, 13 inches (33 cm) wide, and 8 inches (20 cm) deep, weighing approximately 5.1 kg, and is finished in an antique brown treatment that settles a deep oxidized tone across the ornamental surround and structural base, while warmer brass tones surface across the broad, polished face.
The mask is cast in brass and worked by hand across two visually distinct zones. The face itself is rendered with a smooth, slightly convex surface — the snout broad and naturalistic, the nostrils clearly articulated, the eyes set with raised teardrop-shaped relief forms that give the face a focused, alert expression. Framing this face is a large, radiating halo-like surround composed of eight to nine broad petal or leaf forms arranged symmetrically around the circumference. Each petal is densely worked with incised line patterns, scrolling foliate motifs, and punched dot borders that run along the inner edge of the surround. A row of raised circular beads separates the decorated surround from the face itself. Small finial elements project from the tip of each outer petal and from the upper center of the surround. The piece is mounted on a tiered rectangular plinth with perforated decorative borders along its registers. The level of surface carving on the surround — fine, consistent, and tightly controlled — reflects the kind of hand-finishing that cannot be achieved through machine production.
The Panchurali form, depicted with a boar face and ceremonial surround, holds a specific place within regional ritual and devotional traditions. The boar face carries iconographic associations with Varaha, the boar avatar of Vishnu, who is understood in the Puranas to have lifted the earth from the cosmic waters — an act representing the restoration of the world from chaos. Such mask forms have historically been installed in shrines and processional contexts, functioning both as devotional objects and as ceremonially charged representations of protective and cosmic power.
Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been used in Indian devotional and decorative objects for centuries. It accepts fine casting detail reliably, carries meaningful weight relative to its size, and provides a warm, durable surface for oxidized finishes.
The antique brown finish applies an even, deep oxidation across the surround and plinth, drawing the incised carving into clear relief and giving the piece the settled appearance of an aged ceremonial object. The face retains a warmer, slightly brighter brass tone by contrast. Each handcrafted piece carries natural variation in the depth and distribution of this finish.
This mask is well suited for a puja room, a home altar, a collector focused on ritual and devotional brass forms, or as a considered piece of wall-mounted ceremonial décor.
Note: At Cosmic Studio, every sculpture is individually handcrafted, ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike. Minor variations in color, texture, and detailing are a natural result of the artisanal process and are considered marks of authenticity. These unique characteristics, along with potential differences in lighting and screen displays, may cause the product to appear slightly different from the images shown.
Handcrafted — every piece varies by ±3%. That variation is the mark of a human hand, not a flaw.
